Various LAN SERVER Network Attached StorageMark: Bad This is one of the NAS cases that you put your own HD in that are coming out
of China. There are two basic kinds, those that have their own (Windows only)
drivers, which are not OS/2 compatible and those that support SAMBA and hence
connectivity to other OSes than just Windoze.

These devices come from various Chinese exporters and the website reference
in the handbook no longer exists. The one given here is an independent website
that I found. There is also an almost identical device called "LAN DRIVE"
and they in fact claim that the "LAN SERVER" product is an illegal copy of
their hardware and software. These devices are so similar that "in most
cases" the firmware from one will work in the other !

From an OS/2 perspective, when I first bought this and connected it to my LAN,
I tried to get access using Netdrive which kind of worked, sometimes. When
I saw that an eCS VFS for SAMBA had been added to the eCS 2.0 RC3 OS,
I tried that and it worked straight away - or at least one I correctly
modified the sample Rexx script to match what I had configured on the
NAS via it's HTML based configuration pages. This version of eCS VFS
did not have the GUI interface that came in eCS 2.0 RC4.

I now needed to also be able to share the device with my wife's Vista PC.
There is a firmware update for the device to make it work with Vista. This
worked fine except now that when trying to access from eComStation data
written to the device disappears ! On a firmware upgrade there is now way
to save the previous firmware and I have now tried all versions I can fins
but none revert the device to an OS/2-eCS compatible device. So if
considering buying one of these devices, test it with eCS and if it
works DO NOT UPDATE THE FIRMWARE ! There is a registry patch to make
Vista work with the box at the site above - that is a better approach
if you need Vista connectivity as well as eCS.
