MSI Megabook GX623X

Mark: Average

2010/02

I just received a new laptop, MSI Megabook GX623. Here is the short eCS review:

The specs of my new toy: Type: GX623X-026CZ

  • - Intel Centrino 2 T7350 (Core2Duo, 2GHz, 3MB cache. FSB 1066MHz)
  • - Chipset: Intel PM45 Express + ICH9-M
  • - 2x 2048MB DDR2 800MHz
  • - 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050)
  • - ATI M96XT HD4670, 512MB GDDR3 VRAM
  • - Theater Class 5.1channel Surround Sound Effect(RealTek ALC886H)
  • - 2.5", 320GB, SATA + eSATA conector
  • - Super Multi DVD R/RW (LG GSA-H20N)
  • - LAN: 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet adapter (RealTek 8111B)
  • - WLAN: Wi-Fi, IEEE 802.11a/g/n - some Intel type E5100; not sure yet
  • - PC Card: Express Card slot - don't know the chipset yet
  • - Card reader: 4-in-1 (xD/SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro) - don't know the chipset yet

Well, a very nice baby :) Fortunately, with some tweaking, it is possible to install (and run) RC7 on it.

VGA, gigabit and sound are detected automatically by installer and are working. USB is working as well. WLAN is currently not supported by GenMac, although there might be a possibility of making the win driver to work - this will be my next fight. :)

PC Card slot and Card reader do not seem to be supported, as well as bluetooth. Did not try Firewire yet. There is a webcam, don't think it will be (ever) supported either.

There is VGA + HDMI external video, it would be interesting to see if these are working (under Panorama), but have no way to test it currently.

Now the issues: The installer waits indefinitely on phase 1 on HWMERGE.CMD, which needs to be Ctrl-Breaked. Otherwise installation went pretty well. Oh, not the forget that I had to turn off the AHCI support in BIOS. With AHCI on, the installer could not find CDROM drive!

There is no wide screen (1680x1450) support, even activator is stating that this is an unknown chipset (probably too new?).

Using ACPI 3.17; eCS happily boots with ACPI, but -after installation- ACPI Wizard states it is not able to determine the bios type, motherboard type, manufacturer. It seems to have a hard time to precisely detect the CPU type. AcpiBattery, TmrTest, UpTime are working, Thermal and SetGetstate are not, getting inconclusive errors.

Stating the above, it is kind-of crazy that ACPI runs happily on SMP APIC, initializing both CPU cores :)

ACPI Sleep states (S3 so far partially tested) do not seem to work. This will take some time to test properly though. Also thinking about testing some other (older) version of ACPI later on.

Bottom line: eCS is running on this system without any real issues, but it could do *way* better (installer, acpi, widescreen, wlan, cardreader). My speculation would be that the laptop hardware is just too new for acpi and other drivers, this will most probably get better int the near future. So if any body here wants to have a high-end gaming laptop with moderate to good eCS support, this is one of the possibilities.

I have the laptop for some 24 hrs now, so more testing awaits :)
