REXX is always with you

2005-05-28 23:26:09 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [O'Reilly's ONLamp]

Do you know, Which scripting language ...

  • Runs on virtually all platforms and operating systems?
  • Enjoys a strong standard to which all implementations adhere?
  • Comes in object-oriented versions that are upwardly compatible with the standard procedural language?
  • Is known for combining ease of use with power?

Rexx is the answer. Rexx was the first widely used scripting language. Though IBM invented it 25 years ago, it may come as a surprise that this language is more popular today than ever.

Check yourself, do you need REXX? Rexx automates the data definition and typing tasks that other languages require of developers. Like Tcl/Tk, Rexx variables are all variable-length character strings. You can use string values that represent numbers in calculations; the others are simply strings (character, bit, or hex) that allow string manipulations but cannot participate in calculations. Rexx transparently converts data between "types" as needed. For consistent computational results across platforms, Rexx employs decimal rather than binary arithmetic.

Message files internals

2004-10-08 11:52:36 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

Every modern application has multi-language user interface. The users of our operating system live in different countries and prefer applications with native language UI. eComStation & OS/2 have all necessary means to create such multi-language applications.

Yuri Prokushev talks about "Message files internals" & structure (russian language). He offers to simplify creation of multi-language message files & extend system API.

Win32PRN project (3/12)

2004-09-28 16:48:35 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

So, the contacts between parts was restored. You will see on this week:

  • New version of product. Self-extracting WarpIn package with custom build of Odin.

    The product is targeted to end-users, so it should be installed with one mouse click. This will allow increase quantity of testers and users;

    The package without Odin may be released too as "update for previous version";

  • Growth of supported hardware list. The list increases after succesfull test or after improvement of Win32Prn and Odin. So, negative results are important too. Test and configure Win32Prn on compatible printer before testing new one.
  • Participation of testers. Users usually lose the interest to driver development. So, prepare the program of testing and ping developer and support service by time-table.

Advices for developers working over the Internet:

  • Don't tell to one customer that you are going to other and it's necessary stop negotiations :)
  • During action of agreement, both parts unite to achieve one goal. If support service passes suggestions to developer - trust to the service. If division of labour is used, trust to your partner.
  • There are different kinds of customers. Some customers control you the whole day, others give full freedom but require the results unexpectedly even if you didn't nothing during the last month. In any case, if problem occurs, the developer is guilty. The only way to satisfy the desires of customer is make more that he expects.
  • Advices of F/X Communications company

Win32PRN allows use windows printer drivers in OS/2.

Win32Prn project (week 1/12)

2004-09-11 12:43:14 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

The russian developers often ask us why it's impossible sign new agreements with foreign customers. We have a simple answer - one of the agreements was not fulfilled by russian developer, so all contacts with russian community was stopped.

Up to the end of the year we will watch the execution of the contract related to Win32PRN development between Vitaliy Tymchyshyn and dutch company Mensys (the dirver allows use windows printer drivers in OS/2).

We don't know the conditions of the contract, so here is the list preliminary agreements:

  • full documentation;
  • self-extracting distribution pack (WarpIn);
  • debug-version of Win32PRN;
  • own Odin build (to simplify debugging and support of customers)

In the future, the eComStation will allow install windows printer drivers directly from manufacturer's CD.

The list of adorned software is growing every week (includes head-line applications like Serenity Virtual Station virtual machine, OpenOffice.org office suite). Major part of adorned applications was released already and available for end-users. Attractive icons produced by eCo Design improve usability of application and increase its value.

Pay attention to the fact that the designers are users of our operating system. That's why they maintain OS/2 traditions while improving external view of the operating system and applications to satisfy modern requirements.

Modern external view is an important condition to attract new users. Visit Mensys shop to order icons for your own application or your favorite application.
